Are you allowed to use your elbows to shield the ball in soccer?

No.only upper body strength

i play defense for my soccer team and i use my arms all the time to defend the ball. the trick is though, to make it look like you're not pushing away the other player cause the ref will call a foul. but if you keep your arms near your side, but still in a position to block them and give them a litttle push which the ref wont see. the best way to shield the ball though is to turn your back on the opponent and once you notice they are right behind you, start pushing with your back, it works well.

Technically no!

But every ref will have different views on different situations. If, for example, the player is in the box, and he smashes the ball at a defender, standing 5 yars away, and it hits his slightly raised elbow, then that can't possibly be a penalty, because it was unintentional, by the guilty player.

But if you do it intentionally, then it's a hand-ball!
You cannot use your elbows, arms and hands to touch the ball. You can your your arms and shoulder to stop your opponent from reaching the ball. But if you raised your arm too high[you hands are at the same level as your opponent's face],then it was a foul.
No. Anything from the shoulders down is considered hand ball, especially if it's intentional.
depends on the ref really....in one game the ref will let something go and in a different game the ref might call the foul

so in soccer it really depends on the ref
